You Can’t Hide From BMI / ASCAP

If you are playing unlicensed music in your place of business and it can be proven that it is a willful infringement then you could be on the hook for anywhere from $750 to $30,000 per infringement for federal penalties! So if you were playing a CD with 12 songs on it in your restaurant or clothing store then you could see how getting caught can quickly add up and potentially bankrupt a business.
You more than likely could get away with playing your iPod or personal CD collection for your employees but you’ll always know that at some point a BMI and/or ASCAP angent is going to come walking through the door.
